How Accurate Is an Online Decibel Meter?
Short answer: the SoundCheckTools decibel meter shows an estimated sound level. It is useful for comparing loudness around you, but it is not a calibrated professional SPL meter, and it should not be used where certified measurements are required.
How the measurement works
There are three distinct layers, and we keep them separate on purpose:
- Raw digital level (what your device actually measures). Your browser captures the microphone signal and the tool computes its digital level — RMS and peak values in dBFS (decibels relative to digital full scale). This is exact digital math on the signal your device delivers.
- Estimated sound level (what this tool shows). The raw digital level is converted with a nominal heuristic — a rough assumption about where a typical consumer microphone's full scale sits relative to real-world loudness. This makes the numbers readable and broadly plausible, but it is an estimate, not a physically accurate conversion.
- Calibrated SPL (what this tool does not do — yet). True sound pressure level in decibels requires calibrating your specific device against a known reference (for example a sound level calibrator). No calibration is performed in this version, so no reading on this site is a calibrated SPL value.
Why browser microphones can't be trusted as SPL meters
- Unknown microphone sensitivity. Every phone, laptop, and headset has a different microphone and analog gain, and the browser does not report them.
- Signal processing. Operating systems and browsers may apply automatic gain control, noise suppression, and filtering. We request raw audio, but not every device honors that request.
- Frequency response. Consumer microphones are not flat; deep bass and very loud sounds are often under- or over-represented.
- No standard weighting. Professional meters use standardized frequency weightings (A or C) and time weightings. This tool currently applies neither.
What the readings are good for
- Comparing loudness over time on the same device (is it getting louder?).
- Quick checks: room noise, appliances, traffic, rehearsals.
- Learning what different decibel ranges feel like.
Display range and "Below range" readings
The tool displays estimated levels from 30 dB to 120 dB. If the estimated level falls below 30 dB, the readout shows "Below range" instead of a negative SPL-like number. This is a display choice, not a physical threshold: very quiet environments are near the noise floor of typical consumer microphones, and presenting a precise negative value would imply more accuracy than the signal supports.
What they are not good for
- Workplace noise compliance or legal documentation.
- Hearing-safety decisions that require certified measurements.
- Comparing absolute values across different devices.
For those cases, use a calibrated sound level meter. When we add device calibration in the future, this page will be updated and the tool will clearly distinguish calibrated from estimated values.
